Like many little boys, my son thinks Legos are pretty cool. We got him his first Lego Duplo set the day he turned 18 months old and it was love at first sight. What wasn’t to like? From the colors, to the klinking sounds, to the way all the blocks fit together in endless combinations, he was seriously enthralled. And we couldn’t have been happier since playing with Legos is a great for practicing fine motor skills and building big imaginations.
Now at 22 months old, the munchkin is something of a Duplo pro. He has a big collection and until recently his Winnie the Pooh duplo sets were his favorites. But then Mack entered our life. And boy is Mack giving Pooh a run for his money! Since Mack arrived, every morning my son runs out to the living room and shouts “Big red truck!!”
Luckily, I think Pooh and Mack are working it out. I wonder what they’re all saying to each other here?
The characters in Mack’s Road Trip set are based on the Disney Pixar Cars movies. My son has only seen snippets of the first Cars film but even if he had no idea who these characters were, he would have loved them. The set includes two cars (Lightening McQueen and the Sheriff), a big red truck (Mack) and assorted blocks/shapes that allow toddlers to build two road signs, an underpass and a desert cactus. The wheels on both cars are interchangeable and Mack can either be a big rig truck (as shown above) or a flatbed truck (as shown in the 2nd and 3rd photos above). When Mack is a big rig one of the cars fits inside his cargo hold and he has a removable “hat” (as my son calls it) that makes it look like he’s wearing the truck-version of a baseball cap. Also, when in big rig form, Mack’s center piece has to be put together using six different blocks – I like this because it makes my son think when he’s transforming Mack from a flatbed into a big rig.
As with every Lego Duplo set, the pieces in Macks Road Trip are compatible with blocks from other Duplo sets. We have fairly large collection so yesterday my son and his dad built a garage for the cars, and this morning the munchkin decided that Mack really needed a slide on his back. So he attached the slide from Winnie the Pooh’s house and all the Pooh characters took turns sliding down Mack’s back. I never would have thought of that.
There’s one more thing that makes this Duplo set super fun and it applies to all our sets, in fact: Lego recently came out with a bunch of great songs that toddlers can listen to while playing with their Legos. “Sort Out the Blues” encourages them to sort out the blue bricks from their collection, “What Can I Be?” asks them to use their imagination when building, and our favorite, “Brick Racer” is about Duplo cars that are racing around a track. When this song comes on my son literally does a jig then grabs Lightening McQueen and the Sheriff so they can race around the room. Even better, I like the songs. (As in, they are not annoying and I actually enjoy listening to them.) You can hear the DUPLO JAMS here. :)
