Dinosaur Blueberry Pie

Making blueberry pie with a toddler is a messy, messy - fun – experience. Who but a 17-month-old would bring dinosaur cookie cutters into the process? Turns out that “toddler drawer” in my kitchen with its gazillion plastic cookie cutters… is also filled with great ways to use extra pie dough.

This afternoon we made Dorie Greenspan’s Double Crusted Blueberry Pie for the 4th of July. It’s my husband’s favorite and is pretty straightforward as far as pie-making goes. I made the dough while the munchkin was napping, rolled it out while he played with his toys, then we mixed the filling and assembled the pie together. This is where the messy part came in – my son is a huge blueberry fan and did you know it’s super hard to keep a toddler from stealing blueberries when he’s absolutely determined? And who knew “lighty dusting” the counter so we could roll out the leftover dough actually meant flinging flour halfway across the kitchen?

Live and learn. But just look what can emerge from barely contained kitchen chaos. Dinosaurs marching around the edges of your pie.

As a professional food stylist, I’m qualified to say that not only have you made a delicious pie under challenging (but fun) circumstances, you have achieved an almost perfect example of the very difficult ice cream shot.
