Song of the Week: The Skeleton Dance (Halloween Songs)

“The Skeleton Dance” is a fun action song that teaches toddlers to name different bones in their bodies. Many of us grew up knowing part of this song but we didn’t learn the chorus, which is about a dancing skeleton. Remember “the leg bone’s connected to the knee bone”? That’s this song!

The original title of “The Skeleton Dance” was “Dem Bones” and it was a well-known spiritual song in the late 1800′s because it was based upon Ezekiel 37:1-14 where the prophet visits the Valley of Dry Bones. Nowadays it’s a catchy children’s tune, and one that happens to be perfect for Halloween with all that talk of skeletons and bones. :)

This version comes from Super Simple Songs, which is a fantastic YouTube resource for children’s music. In addition to teaching the names of different bones, the actions in this song also reinforce directions (right, left, up). The munchkin and I learned “The Skeleton Dance” this afternoon and it’s already becoming a fast favorite.

The Skeleton Dance Lyrics

Dem bones, dem bones, dem dancing bones,
Dem bones, dem bones, dem dancing bones,
Dem bones, dem bones, dem dancing bones,
Doin’ the skeleton dance.

The foot bone’s connected to the leg bone.
The leg bone’s connected to the knee bone.
The knee bone’s connected to the neck bone.
Doin’ the skeleton dance.

The thigh bone’s connected to the hip bone.
The hip bone’s connected to the backbone.
The backbone’s connected to the neck bone.
Doin’ the skeleton dance.

Shake your hands to the left.
Shake your hands to the right.
Put your hands in the air.
Put your hands out of sight!

Shake your hands to the left.
Shake your hands to the right.
Put your hands in the air.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle,
wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle… wiggle your knees.

Dem bones, dem bones, dem dancing bones,
Dem bones, dem bones, dem dancing bones,
Dem bones, dem bones, dem dancing bones,
Doin’ the skeleton dance.

Only a year late ;), but thanks for the great post on “The Skeleton Dance”!! It’s one of my favorite classroom songs, especially the wiggle, wiggle part. My students and I can’t sing it without giggling!
We’re gearing up for this year’s Halloween season and have a whole section of our website dedicated to Halloween songs, games, party ideas and more.
Hope you and the Munchkin have a great day!
