Song of the Week: Put Your Finger On (Action Song)

This week’s tune is an action song that’s so much fun it doubles as a game. The formula is simple: you sing a melody that tells your toddler to touch different things with their finger (nose, ear, chair, dog, whatever!) then they spin around and clap their hands.

In many ways this song is similar to the Copy Game I posted earlier today. I love how both the game and this song have endless possibilities in terms of variation and how they reinforce your toddler’s growing vocabulary by asking them to identify different things. You can also use this song/game with a baby or younger toddler to teach them the names of objects. In that case, it’s your finger that’s touching their nose, eyes, ears, etc, as you sing the song.

Below is a version of the song from Parachute Express. I love the melody they use but wish there wasn’t a squeaking duck in the background. :)

If you modify the lyrics slightly you can also sing this song to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” (Example below).

Put Your Finger On

(Parachute Express Version)

Put your finger on, put your finger on, put your finger on…
Your nose.
Put your finger on, put your finger on, put your finger on…
Your nose.

Turn around, clap clap.
Turn around, clap clap.
Turn around, clap clap.
Turn around, clap clap.

[Repeat with other body parts or objects. In this song they go in the following order: nose, knees, eyes, tummy.]

Put Your Finger On

(If You’re Happy and You Know It version)

Put your finger on your nose, on your nose.
Put your finger on your nose, on your nose.
Put your finger on your nose,
Put your finger on your nose,
Put your finger on your nose, on your nose.
