Song of the Week: 5 Green and Speckled Frogs

The munchkin has been eager to learn his numbers lately, so of course he loves counting songs. One of his favorites is “5 Green and Speckled Frogs,” which is a simple song that counts backwards from five as the frogs jump into a pool.

Another version of this song (and the one shown above) is “Five Little Speckled Frogs.” I wrote the lyrics to “Green and Speckled Frogs” below because that’s the way we learned this song, but the melody is the same for both versions. There are also hand motions that go with this song:

  • At the beginning of each verse when you say how many frogs there are, hold up the appropriate number of fingers.
  • When the song says “yum yum,” rub your tummy.
  • When a frog jumps into the pool, have your fingers jump into an imaginary pool.
  • Then hold up the new number of fingers for the end of the verse.
  • Repeat!

5 Green and Speckled Frogs – Lyrics

Five green and speckled frogs, (Or “Five little speckled frogs”)
Sat on a hollow log, (or “sat on a speckled log”)
Eating some most delicious bugs,
Yum, Yum.
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are only four green speckled frogs,
Glub, glub.

Four green and speckled frogs,
Sat on a hollow log,
Eating some most delicious bugs,
Yum, Yum.
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are only three green speckled frogs,
Glub, glub.

Three green and speckled frogs,
Sat on a hollow log,
Eating some most delicious bugs,
Yum, Yum.
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are only two green speckled frogs,
Glub, glub.

Two green and speckled frogs,
Sat on a hollow log,
Eating some most delicious bugs,
Yum, Yum.
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there’s only one green speckled frog,
Glub, glub.

One green and speckled frog,
Sat on a hollow log,
Eating some most delicious bugs,
Yum, Yum.
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are no green speckled frogs,
Glub, glub.

  • Cute song!  I’ll have to remember to find it for DD – she’s starting to say her numbers, and I need some new songs for her :)  [she's kinda stuck on the same few songs]

    • Glad you like it Kat! Yea, variety is key when it comes toddler songs (at least for us parents). Now that Halloween is over I’m finally allowed to stop singing Dem Bones a gajillion billion times a day. :)

  • M came home last week singing this song!  Bad mama never taught it to her…but her teachers did!  (I had to ask her teachers what it was – not a song I know, and because it goes so fast, it’s hard to understand her…but now I know the words, I completely understand her!)  We sang it all weekend!

    • Please don’t call yourself a bad mama, you’re an awesome mom! How fun that M came home singing this song and taught it to you. I think that’s even better than you teaching it to her. :)
